They say the TackleAfrica Football Marathon is the breeding ground for international super stardom but don’t ask us about it, ask Latvian hero Mārtiņš Akmentiņš who last week represented Latvia at the Socca World Cup in Crete.
Martin turned out for More than a Game FC at the 2017 London Football Marathon, they raised an amazing £2070 for TackleAfrica and finished 14th out of 48 teams scoring 44 and conceding 25 on a sun soaked day down at Wormwood scrubs.
The Latvian World Cup side itself certainly had credentials then. Not only a TackleAfrica Football Marathon product but also Maris Verpakovskis, capped over 100 times for the full Latvian side, who scored home and away for Latvia when they knocked Turkey out in the Euro 2004 Play Off. Maris also played in the Latvia side that drew 0-0 against Germany at Euro 2004 in Portugal.
The World Cup consisted of 40 teams from around the globe including all the giants of the game from.
Latvia would go out in the groups after winning their first game but then losing the next three. Russia would ultimately win the tournament reffed by Mark Clattenburg in a 3-2 victory against Poland.
So from all of us here at TackleAfrica we want to congratulate Mārtiņš on such a magnificent achievement and we hope to see him donning his TA Football Marathon 2020 top next year!
