What’s small, fun to use, fits in your pocket and is the only item that protects you against HIV, sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancies?
Of course, it’s a condom!
We know there seem to be international days for everything now, but this amazing gadget truly does deserve its own day. Condoms come in all shapes, colours, sizes, flavours and for both men and women and are our best protection against almost all sexually transmitted infections including HIV. Condoms also prevent pregnancy, and allow you to take control of when you fall pregnant. Using a condom truly is a great way to have safe sex and protect yourself and your partner. Condoms are available all over Africa, often for free. But despite these amazing benefits, many of us feel embarrassed buying or taking condoms. This is something our programmes strive to address, removing the taboo of talking about sex and sexual health and making using condoms part of our everyday sexual lives.
As coach Fatuma says on the Laureus programme in Uganda, “the most patient customers in the world are those buying condoms. They’ll always say ‘give him first, I’ll wait…’ But coaches we need to fight against this! Let’s train our players to feel free, and that it’s not a crime to protect themselves against HIV and other STIs.”
Fatuma is right. As coaches we can train our players how to kick a ball but at the same time we can also teach them something much more valuable: how to help end HIV once and for all.
