This week our partner Moving The Goalposts Kilifi, Kenya is training a cohort of TackleAfrica TOTs (Trainer of Trainers), preparing them for one of the biggest training courses in TackleAfrica history. Next week, over eighty TackleAfrica coaches and trainers will come together for the final course of a three year programme, focussing on preventing unintended pregnancies and preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
These TOT need to be experts on the TackleAfrica HIV curriculum, know the football drills inside out, and on top of that be skilled coaches, communicators and classroom teachers. They need to know how to develop a struggling coach, as well as keep a talented coach challenged in her work, all the while keeping accurate records of sessions and player knowledge. It’s a tough week of training, but the trainers know it’s worth it, as they have seen first hand the impact this programme is having in their communities and amongst the MTG players.
We interviewed this gregarious group of trainers, asking them if they’d seen a difference in their communities, and they felt, following the TackleAfrica sessions over the last two years, that more women were giving birth in hospitals and were following medical advice if pregnant or HIV positive. They agreed their field visits to young coaches was important, saying it was essential to ensure the correct health messages were being delivered to the community. And lastly we asked if they were enjoying their role. It was a unanimous yes! But for lots of different reasons. “I’m gaining confidence and adding more skills” was one. “I enjoy being a role model to our community” was another. And the skills were also transferable to other areas of their lives. “It helps us to know how to solve problems” they agreed. Lastly, the small stipend was a boost to them and their families, “the allowance that we get after doing facilitation is helping us.”
We are looking forward to next week, where eighty young coaches will arrive at the training venue, wanting to know what the week has in store. We know these TOTs will be ready!
